In 597 AD, King Æthelberht of Kent received a message from Pope Gregory to bring Christianity to England. A group of missionaries, led by Augustine, arrived in Kent and began to spread the new faith. Æthelberht was initially hesitant but eventually converted to Christianity. He built the first church in Kent and became a key figure in the spread of Christianity in England.
Over the next few decades, more missionaries arrived, and the Christian faith began to take hold. The king of Essex, Sæberht, and the king of the East Angles, Rædwald, also converted to Christianity. The church grew in influence, and the laws of the land began to reflect Christian values.
The conversion of Æthelberht marked the beginning of a new era in English history, one that would see the old pagan traditions slowly give way to the new Christian faith. Despite some challenges and setbacks, the church continued to grow and play a major role in shaping English society in the early Middle Ages.
