The Places of Worship Act, 1991, was introduced to preserve the religious character of places of worship as they stood on August 15, 1947, and prevent the conversion of such sites. Recently, the law has come under scrutiny due to violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, following a court-ordered survey of a mosque, and the Gyanvapi Mosque Management Committee filing a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the law’s validity. This has sparked debates about whether the law should be enforced to prevent further civil suits targeting mosques and dargahs, and whether judicial overreach is occurring with court-ordered surveys that may violate the protections granted by the Act. The Supreme Court is set to hear these petitions on December 12.
