In 1988, Virginia was invited to teach in the U.S.S.R., the only therapist ever to have that honor. Dr. Bob Spitzer went along with the delegation as the videographer on that trip and captured the sessions and friendliness of the people of the Soviet Union in this film. Most films of Virginia are clinical studies of her techniques and family reconstructions, but this film also adds a rare glimpse of her interacting with many people from the halls of the University of Moscow to the living rooms and kitchens of newly made friends in Lithuania. She remained a leading force for human growth and family therapy until her death in 1988, four months after this trip. Get a glimpse into the U.S.S.R. before its dissolution as Virginia connects with the people in her own special masterful way.
Virginia Satir, author and psychologist, was widely regarded as the "Mother of Family Therapy". Her entire work was done under the umbrella of "Becoming More Fully Human" and her career spanned over 45 years. Rather than placing her focus on illness, Satir's style came to be based on personal growth. She was concerned with the health and healing of each individual human spirit by connecting with a universal life force. She continually planted the seeds of hope toward world peace and was increasingly in demand all over the United States and abroad at the time of her death in 1988.
Dr. Bob Spitzer, now age 87, is a graduate of Harvard Law School, Washington University Medical School and is a member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He worked closely with Virginia Satir teaching family therapy in the sixties, was her publisher as the President of Science and Behavior Books, and became a very close friend and member of the Virginia Satir Global Network.
LB Johnson, is a videographer living in Santa Cruz, CA. Most of LB'z work has been focused on peace, justice and environmental issues. Dr. Bob and LB first met in the mid 80's, through Bill Motto VFW Post 5888, recording activities around the U.S. involvement in Central America. They re-connected recently to create this video and further the Triad work of Virginia through Dr. Bob Spitzer.
