Mycoplasma genitalium is a type of bacteria that can cause a sexually transmitted infection (STI). It spreads through sexual contact, including vaginal and anal sex. Many people with this infection don’t experience symptoms, but when they do, they may include:
Men: Watery discharge from the penis, burning or pain while urinating.
Women: Vaginal discharge, pain during sex, bleeding after sex or between periods, and pelvic pain.
It can lead to complications like urethritis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and cervicitis, which may affect fertility2. Diagnosis is done through a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT), which detects the bacteria’s genetic material. Treatment typically involves antibiotics, though Mycoplasma genitalium can be resistant to some common antibiotics1
