I wanted to buy another lava lamp for my new studio since some weeks. And suddenly last week Mathmos announced the ASTRO VINYL! So this was my chance to buy one.
The new Astro Vinyl limited edition lava lamp inspired me to make this clip. Instead of making a classic unboxing video I had a lush tune in mind I produced back in 1998. It was part of our Hardcouch project, a compilation series dedicated to loungecore and future listening. The music was provided by a bunch of friends who had much fun with electronics back in the days.
After having a lot of fun filming lava with the my new ASTRO VINYL, I just had to find the right Moonbuggy to fill the space. And thanks to NASA there it was. I simply love this old space stuff!
And this is why this video is dedicated to John Watts Young, 1930 - 2018. The astronaut, who took this uncomparable ride during the Apollo 16 mission in April 1971.
As part of the engineering evaluation of the Apollo Lunar Rover, a clip of 16mm film was shot by astronaut Charlie Duke of his commander, John Young, taking the electrically powered vehicle for a spin near to their lunar module, Orion.
I produced the track in my old studio in September 1998 with the following instruments:
Drums & Percussions: Roland TR-707, TR-727, Yamaha RY30
Bass: Roland SH-101
Synth: Roland Juno-60
Sampler: Kurzweil K2000
Rhodes: Roland JV-1080 with 60&70ies cardEffects: Lexicon LXPxxx, Ensoniq DP4, Digitech Studio Quad, Korg A3
Desk Studiomaster P7 24 track
MIDI-Sequencing: Pre VST Cubase.
The dominant string sample might be something from an old 50ies soundtrack. But I don’t remember and I distorted it a lot.
