Polymeric gels (Poly-gels) are soft materials that can undergo large reversible elastic deformations. Their mechanical response can be modulated through external stimuli, thus allowing many applications via the ability to program their shape and actuation. Yet, most of what is known to date concerns isotropic poly-gels, which significantly hinders their application potential. To effectively bridge this limitation, we propose a model for microstructure-induced anisotropy in poly-gels through the introduction of orientational order. This offers a tool to couple internal degrees of freedom of embedded anisotropic particles to the polymeric backbone. We will show how to formulate a dimensionally reduced model for anisotropic poly-gel surfaces and investigate their instabilities and pattern formation. We will discuss the consequences of this theory in generating solutions for shape-changing and how to bridge gaps between the theoretical understanding of these materials and engineering solutions.
