Coulthard had jumped the start & was leading. It was under investigation, before being confirmed, and before a 10 second Stop Go penalty would be issued (which he would have had to served after completing no more than 3 laps after the penalty was issued).

Whilst Coulthard and everybody knew he would be penalised, until the stewards had officially notified the team of a penalty, he played the team game & tried his best to keep Schumacher behind him, so that his team mate Mika Hakkinen could stay close to Schumacher and perhaps have a chance to overtake him.

What followed was some brilliant racing in slippery conditions, Coulthard & Schumacher handled close combat absolutely brilliantly.
