Tapirs are gentle, elusive rainforest dwellers — and the largest land mammals in Latin America. In Costa Rica’s Tenorio-Miravalles Biological Corridor, they often leave protected areas and cross paths with people, livestock, and roads — putting their safety and health at risk.
In this Morris Animal Foundation-funded project, Dr. Jorge Rojas and his team are building a national tapir health surveillance program. By tracking tapirs, monitoring disease risks from livestock, and collaborating with farmers, rangers, and veterinarians, they aim to protect this endangered species and reduce human-wildlife conflict across Costa Rica.
Learn how this innovative project blends conservation, science, and community to safeguard tapirs now and into the future.
