Era interrato nei pressi del cancello meridionale del tempio di Ptah, unica statua sopravvissuta di una coppia posta all'ingresso del tempio.

Chiamato anche Ramses il Grande, Signore dell'Alto e del Basso Egitto, è stato il terzo sovrano della XIX dinastia e regnò dal 1279 al 1212 a.C., figlio di Seti I e della regina Tuya.
Grazie alla durata eccezionale del suo regno, oggi gli egittologi usano chiamare col suo nome l'intero periodo della sua dinastia (Epoca Ramesside).
Fece costruire numerosissimi monumenti in tutto il paese e incise il suo nome su altrettante opere dei suoi predecessori; una tale quantità di oggetti d'arte e di elementi architettonici ha fatto sì che vi sia traccia di lui in qualsiasi museo del mondo che ospiti una collezione dedicata all'Antico Egitto. fece costruire sei templi, i più celebri dei quali sono certamente quelli di #AbuSimbel.

The Colossus of Ramses II is an immense limestone statue depicting Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt #RamessesII .
