The East Cardinal Mark indicates that safe water lies to the east of the buoy. It helps mariners avoid dangers such as rocks or shallow areas located to the west.
Its color pattern is black with a single broad yellow band in the middle, symbolizing the rising sun in the east. The topmark consists of two black cones pointing away from each other (base to base) — forming an hourglass shape.
During the night, its light flashes white three times (Q(3) or VQ(3)), repeating every 10 seconds — the three flashes represent the three o’clock position on a clock face, reminding seafarers of the East direction.
This vital navigation aid ensures vessels pass safely to the east side of the danger area, maintaining a clear and secure route
