Decorated with pairs of whimsical and even mythical animals, such as dragons, peacocks and centipedes, this coverlet is a feast for the eyes and imagination. In this video, join Collections and Research Public Programming Specialist Brittany Guerrette as she discusses a beautifully crewel embroidered coverlet in the Old Sturbridge Village collection.
The coverlet is made up of right triangles that form squares, in white and printed cotton. Some are woodblock printed, some copperplate printed, and some printed checks, with a few pieces of white dimity and other white cotton fabric. In the center is one large white cotton square embroidered with a symmetrical urn of flowers in full color. There is also a large triangle in each of the four corners with a symmetrical urn in color. The triangles throughout the coverlet are embroidered with birds, insects, animals, fish, and flowers, all in pairs including alligators, deer, lions, ducks, peacocks, dragons, sea horses, fish, snakes, centipedes, tadpoles, butterflies, etc. The coverlet has been taken apart and a few squares have been replaced.
