Why on earth would you want to cycle from Hong Kong to England? A lot of people asked me that. I'd decided to move back to Britain after living for years in Asia, and I thought it would be great to make the long journey home by bike. Wouldn't it be dangerous, difficult etc, especially a woman on her own, people said... Well, yes. But to me, it seemed obvious that it'd still be a brilliant thing to try and do. And in spring 2006, after a flurry of planning and preparation, I dropped the keys to my Hong Kong flat into my landlord's letterbox, pedalled nervously to the harbour to say goodbye, and I set off for London.
Since then, work and life meant that I never put together the materials I recorded on that journey. Now, nearly 15 years on, I am finally trying to make a set of films about the ride. And here is episode one! It shows how it all began, including just some of the many lovely people who helped me prepare.
I'll upload the films as I finish them, which will be over the next few months, I imagine. I hope they will show that - despite all the things that did go wrong - it was absolutely a brilliant thing to try and do.
