What is a VFD?
A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is an electronic device that controls the speed, torque, and direction of an AC motor by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor.
👉 In simple words:
VFD = Speed controller for AC motorsWhy VFD is Used?
Without VFD:
Motor runs at constant speed
High starting current (5–7 times rated)
Energy waste
Mechanical stress
With VFD:
Smooth start & stop
Adjustable speed
Energy saving
Longer motor lifeMotor Speed Formula (Very Important)
📌 VFD works by changing frequency, so motor speed changes.
Example:
50 Hz → full speed
25 Hz → half speedWorking Principle of VFD
A VFD works in three main stages:
🔹 1. Rectifier Section
Converts AC input to DC
Uses diodes or thyristors
🔹 2. DC Bus (DC Link)
Smooths DC voltage
Uses capacitors & inductors
Stores energy
🔹 3. Inverter Section
Converts DC to variable AC
Uses IGBTs

Digital inputs
PLC / SCADA (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet)Braking Methods in VFD
🔸 DC Injection Braking
Injects DC into motor
Fast stopping
🔸 Dynamic Braking
Uses braking resistor
Energy converted to heat
🔸 Regenerative Braking
Energy returned to supply
Used in elevators, cranesHarmonics in VFD
What are harmonics?
Unwanted frequency components generated by VFD rectifier.
Problems:
Heating of transformer
Poor power factor
Cable losses
