Thomas Miller's poem 'Summer Morning' is truly a masterclass in poetic imagery. With a total of 31 stanzas, it is a long poem, but each stanza shows off Miller's skill at evoking a scene through his beautiful use of language. Miller wrote 'Summer Morning' in London in 1841, but in it he reminisces about summer mornings in his childhood home town of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, and the surrounding countryside. To accompany the poem, I've added some present-day photos of the area which inspired Miller's writing.
So, pour yourself a drink of something nice, sit back, and enjoy a summer morning in 19th century Lincolnshire...

Note on the images:
All of the photographs are my own, taken in Gainsborough and around Lincolnshire. The windmill is the beautifully preserved mill at Heckington. The two old trees are the Major Oak in Sherwood Forest and one in the grounds of Doddington Hall near Lincoln.
