In the mid-7th century, the expanding Islamic state posed a threat to Byzantine control over Mediterranean trade. Caliph Uthman responded by building a fleet led by Abdullah ibn Saad. Despite a smaller force, the Muslims faced the larger Byzantine fleet at Dhat al-Sawari near modern Turkey. Using close-combat tactics, they tied their ships to the Byzantines', transforming the battle into intense hand-to-hand combat.
