~8th Alarm~
Date: 4/6/2021
Location: 34th Avenue near 89th Street Queens.
The thick smoke was billowing down the 6th floor hallway and had started to force itself out the apartment windows. Around 1pm multiple 911 calls were received reporting a fire in an apartment building on 34th Avenue in Jackson Heights. Ladder 154 radioed Queens dispatchers with an urgent message, "10-75, top floor fire k". Engine companies quickly reached the top floor and extinguished the main body of fire. The Chief of the 14th Division however noticed a worsening smoke condition from the street and radioed to the 49 Battalion to check it out. The 49 quickly got back to the 14 confirming that the fire had reached the cockloft. For the next 10 hours and 8 alarms the fire would ravage the building. Difficult to reach pockets of fire along with heavy heat and smoke made this a tough battle. Nearly 11 hours later, with Fire Commissioner Nigro having been on scene for a time, the fire would finally be placed Under Control.
