I recently took part in the Iron Butt Association Britt Butt Rally. What a laugh! There were some serious pros taking part and a few who just wanted a good weekend on a motorbike.

The basic goal was to get to as many checkpoints (bonuses) and score points as you go, within 36 hours.

Whilst many used Garmins and Tomtoms and used software like Basecamp to import the GPX files, I rely on two satnav apps on my phone. Calimoto and Waze.

So how to import a GPX file into Google maps?

We need a few apps first. Google Mail (a gmail account), Google Drive and Google Maps. All signed in using the same Google account.

Google maps can’t handle GPX files but Google My Maps is the backend gubbins of Google Maps and can!


The Google My Maps function in a web browser can be used to import GPX files into Google Maps the app.

The imported GPX file can then also be displayed in the Google Maps app at any time.

Once in Google Maps, you can plot a route of upto 8 points giving a real-time estimate of how long it’ll take but I prefer to use Waze when actually riding as it shows live traffic, live speed cameras and Police hotspots.
