Translation by Ratan Kumar Das
I'm a girl captives indoors
You won't know me
But I have read your last novel - Saratbabu
The Garland of Stale Flowers
The heroine of you Elokeshi
Longed to die at thirty five
Though she had a feud with someone at thirty five
Glad to see you benevolent enough
That you gave her life
Let me speak of me
I'm a girl of tender age
And was touched by a heart
Nothing but the illusion of my age
And with it my body shivered
Forgetting that I was a girl commonplace
Thousands are there like me
Whose youth cast spells
I implore you
To write the tale of an ordinary girl
Who has sorrows enough
If something lies in her nature
How can she prove that one
How many such people may she come by?
With the youthful magic
Their eyes are mesmerized
The minds hardly search for the truth
And are lost in the mirage of weeds
Why do I raise the thing
Let me explain
Suppose Naresh is his name
He said no one did fascinate him like me
Such lofty words I dared to believe
But lacked the courage to disbelieve
Once he left for abroad
Occasional letters I received
And thought , Oh my god
So many girls also live there
So much they struggle and throng!
And how peerless are they
So intelligent so bright!
And now they have discovered this Naresh
Who was suppressed here in the crowd of others
In the last mail he wrote
He had gone to bathe I the sea with Lizzi
( also quoted few lines of a bengali poet
Where Urbashi came out of the sea)
And they Sat on the sand , side by side
The blue sea swayed before them
The soft sunlight spread the sky
Lizzi whispered to him,
," You just have come and will leave soon
Let the breach between the two shells of an oyster be filled with a drop of solid tear -
Rare and invaluable ."
What a way of narrative!
Naresh also wrote,
" What is the harm even if it is contrived !
Are diamond studded flowers real or they not?
You may well understand
How the hint of comparison
Pierces my heart like an unseen thorn
And reminds me of that I'm a girl commonplace
I'm no worthy to meet up a worth
Then let it be so, oh my dear
May I indebted to you for ever
I beg to you Saratbabu
Please write a story
Story of a mere mundane girl
Who has to compete from distance
With five or seven women
Bearing lashes of seven damsels
I know my fate is ill
And am defeated
But the girl you will write about
Make her victorious on my behalf -
So that my heart will be filled
With pride while reading
Blessed be your pen .
You give her the name Malati
That is my name
But there is hardly any chance of being caught
As there are so many Malatis in Bengal
All of them are ordinary girls
Don't know French or German
Only they know to weep and cry
How will you make her victorious?
You have a mind lofty
And a pen mighty
Perhaps you will lead her to the way of sacrifice like Shakuntala
Pardon me please
You come to the level of me
I'll not get the mercy of god
That I beg for
Every night lying on my bed
But let your heroine get that blessings
You keep Naresh in London for seven years
Let him fail in exams for years
But be adorned by his devotees
In the meantime Malati will pass MA
From Calcutta University
And be top in Mathematics
Only by one stroke of your pen
But once you stop there
Your name as emperor of literature
Will be stained
You should not belittle your fancy _
You are not so miserly as god
You send the girl to Europe
Where the wises scholars and valours
The poet's the artists the kings
Surrond her in groups
And discover her alike astronomers
Not as a scholar
But as a woman
The magic remains in her
That can conquer the world
Be realised not by the folks of a fool's nation
But in there
Where learned sympathisers are in galore
The English , the German , the French
Let big conferences be organised to honour Malati
And assume all the praises are being showered on her
And she moves along listlessly
As a boat sails on water smoothly
They will gossip about her eyes
And say, the wet cloud and sunshine of India
Are there in her eyes combined
(Here in aside I say
I have the blessings of charm in my countenance _
Though it has not yet been discovered
By any European connoisseur )
Let Naresh appear in a corner there
Along with his band of extra ordinary girls
And after that?
My tale is told
My dreams decline
Alas you the ordinary girl
What a waste of God's might.
