Mobutu Sese Seko, born Joseph-Désiré Mobutu, was the President of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) from 1965 to 1997. He rose to power through a military coup, later established a single-party rule, and renamed the country Zaire in 1971. His rule was marked by authoritarianism, widespread corruption, and economic decline, but also by his anti-communist stance which secured him support from Western powers during the Cold War. He was overthrown by Laurent Kabila in 1997 and died in exile the same year.
Early life and career
Born in 1930 in Lisala, Belgian Congo.
His mother was a hotel maid, and his father was a cook for a Belgian judge.
He was educated in Catholic missionary schools before being expelled for rebellious behavior.
Conscripted into the colonial army, he rose to the rank of sergeant major and worked as a journalist while in the army.
Rise to power
After independence in 1960, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Army under the government of Patrice Lumumba.
He staged a military coup in 1960, removing Lumumba from power and installing a government that later arranged for Lumumba's execution.
In 1965, he staged a second coup, ousting the existing president and declaring himself president.
Presidency
Established a single-party state, with his party, the Popular Movement of the Revolution, becoming the sole legal political party in 1967.
Renamed the country Zaire in 1971, and himself to Mobutu Sese Seko in 1972.
Implemented a policy of "national authenticity" to purge the country of colonial influence.
His regime became known for corruption, human rights abuses, and economic mismanagement, while he amassed a vast personal fortune.
Secured significant support from Western powers like the United States, which saw him as a bulwark against communism in Africa.
Downfall and death
Following the end of the Cold War, Zaire lost its strategic importance and foreign aid was cut off.
Growing internal and external pressure forced him to agree to power-sharing and multi-party reforms, but he continued to use military force to maintain control.
A rebellion led by Laurent Kabila, supported by neighboring countries, successfully overthrew Mobutu in 1997.
He died in exile in Rabat, Morocco, in September 1997, from prostate cancer.
