Last May I shared a version of "Amy" which was inspired by Amy Johnson's epic flight from England to Australia in 1930. Amy was not the only aviator to capture the public admiration during the 1930s. Jim Mollison had also flown to Australia. A 1932 flight to Canada had sealed his popularity and prompted this tribute song.
It seemed fitting that the same year he married Amy Johnson. The two became known as "The flying sweethearts". In 1933 they flew to New York. Whilst both were experienced flyers, neither was very good at landing! The penultimate photograph shows an august group, Eleanor Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, Jim Mollison, Amy Johnson and President Roosevelt. Jim and Amy both wearing bandages as a result of their crash landing.
"Bravo! Jim" did not prove as popular as "Amy" . The only other recorded version was by Billy Cotton.
I originally uploaded this record in 2009. This is one of several videos from that year to be re-uploaded in mp3.
*** I would like to express my gratitude to Jonathan Holmes for the transfer and video ***.
Vocal chorus by Pat O'Malley
Recorded 24th August 1932.
