A Mobile woman says her home was heavily damaged after police executed a search warrant Tuesday night. Mobile police confirm two men were arrested on drug charges and attempting to elude following the operation at a home on Lincoln Street in Trinity Gardens. Now, the homeowner says she wants the city to pay for repairs.
“It was a mess. It was a mess,” said Kimberly Collins.
Collins says she returned home to find the SWAT team’s armored vehicle in her driveway.
“When I walked up, they pulled their guns, told me to get back,” Collins said.
Collins says the armored vehicle rammed her front door, ripping the door and frame from the house. A porch column was knocked down into the yard, glass was shattered inside the home, and she says her car was also damaged.
“It wasn’t necessary at all,” Collins said. “I had never seen them do anybody house like this before.”
Police arrested 22-year-old Darrell Richardson on charges of attempting to elude and first-degree possession of marijuana. Collins’ son, 25-year-old Ta’Varess Collins, was also arrested for possession of a controlled substance and attempting to elude. Collins disputes the allegation that her son tried to run.
“He was in the backyard, then he came back in the house, but he didn’t run,” she said.
Collins says this is not the first time police have searched her home. In 2023, her younger son, Sidney Collins, was sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison after attempting to bring a loaded gun that was illegally modified with a Glock switch into a nightclub on Dauphin Street. The 24-year-old is also one of six people charged in the February 15, 2022 drive-by shooting death of 14-year-old Daniel Blackmon on Cheshire Drive South. Sidney Collins is scheduled to go on trial for murder in less than two weeks. When asked whether she believes the latest search is connected to that case, Collins said, “I don’t know what they looking for.”
Collins says she's now looking for compensation for the damage to her home.
“I want my house fixed,” Collins said. “This wasn’t called for.”
A spokesperson for the Mobile Police Department says officers followed department policies and procedures and declined further comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
Sidney Collins' murder trial could be delayed. The state says the prosecutor in the case has accepted a new job. The newly assigned prosecutor is Matt Simpson, who is also a member of the Alabama House of Representatives. The state says he's currently busy with the legislative session and can't go to trial this month. A hearing is set for March 12th at 9 a.m. in Judge Windom's court.
