Jessica quickly recognizes the Fremen as the key to Paul’s survival and eventual rise. She cleverly invokes the religious myths planted by the Bene Gesserit's Missionaria Protectiva—a secret program that seeded superstitions across the galaxy—to position herself and Paul as figures of prophecy.

To earn their trust, she agrees to become their Reverend Mother by drinking the Water of Life, a deadly spice essence that only a trained Bene Gesserit can survive. In doing so, she not only gains their full acceptance but also absorbs the memories of all the Reverend Mothers who came before her. This ritual profoundly alters her, physically and mentally. Paul also embraces his role as a messianic figure for the Fremen. But as the years pass, Jessica begins to worry. The Fremen now revere Paul not just as a leader, but as a literal god, and she senses the dangerous consequences of this blind faith.

Though Paul fulfills the prophecy and leads the Fremen to victory over the Harkonnens and the Emperor, Jessica’s satisfaction is tempered by deep regret. She sees that the religious myth she once used as a tool has spiraled beyond her control. The Fremen’s fanatical devotion threatens to unleash a bloody jihad across the galaxy in Paul’s name. Even though her son truly is the Kwisatz Haderach, Jessica fears what he is becoming—and what she helped create. By the end, she no longer feels victorious, but burdened. Her earlier choices, driven by love and survival, have helped birth a new empire—but also a new form of tyranny...cloaked in messianic glory.
