➡️ Muscular Dystrophy Definition:
As we mentioned, muscular dystrophy an inherited condition of progressive muscle weakness that results in the inability to walk, difficulty swallowing, respiratory muscle insufficiency, and respiratory failure. This is why it's an important topic for Respiratory Therapists. The muscular weakness stems from a lack of a protein called dystrophin which is required for our muscles to function normally.

➡️ Types of Muscular Dystrophy
There are several different types of muscular dystrophy and the disease state occurs in different stages. This means that the treatment varies according to whichever stage the patient is currently in. Because there are so many different types of muscular dystrophy, the symptoms can vary widely from patient to patient. The prognosis depends on the type and the severity of symptoms as well. With that said, unfortunately, most people who are diagnosed with muscular dystrophy eventually lose their ability to walk and will require a wheelchair. At this time, there is not a known cure but certain treatment methods can help.

This condition can occur at any age but, most of the time, the diagnosis occurs in children. Also, note that studies found this disease to occur more often in young boys than in girls.
