Want to get stronger this year?
Before looking for videos on squatting or deadlifting and correcting your form and technique, make sure you can first move each hip.
I’m talking about learning and developing the basics of human movement before you start looking for specific exercise information.
You can use this simple test to examine how each hip moves. You’ll be able to gather some important information fairly quickly by doing this hip test. Seeing how this movement tests the ability of each hip to flex and externally rotate, the basic movement needed to squat, deadlift, or bend forward, you’ll quickly feel why those movements might be uncomfortable or troublesome.
If each hip can’t do this movement easily, what do you think happens when you squat, lift or bend forward?
Chances are you’ll put more weight on one side, pull more weight with the side that moves better, hike, rotate, and shift your pelvis out of a centered and level position. Not to mention what your lower back has to do with being caught in the middle of a hip imbalance…
Maybe you can wiggle your way out of proper function and good form for a few weeks, a few months, maybe even a year or two, but the stronger your get, the stronger the dysfunction will get, and so begins the vicious cycle of making progress, getting stronger, then getting injured, then stopping until symptoms calm down, then starting all over again only to have the same thing happen again and again.
To break that vicious cycle and deal with underlying dysfunction, the first step to improving your movement is understanding your movement.
What happens when you move?
What joints move well?
What joints can hardly move at all?
How do you stand? Bend? Twist? Walk? Squat?
Does the right side move like the left?
Before seeking expensive help from specialists and hyper-specific technique information, work on developing the basic foundation to move first.
