India’s space agency recently faced a setback when a PSLV rocket mission failed, leading to the loss of the Anvesha satellite along with 15 other satellites. The launch took place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota and was intended to place multiple satellites into orbit for observation, research, and technology demonstration purposes.
The launch initially appeared normal, with the rocket lifting off smoothly and completing its early stages as planned. However, a problem developed during the third stage of the rocket’s flight. Because of this malfunction, the vehicle could not maintain its correct trajectory and failed to reach the intended orbit.
As a result of the failure, the main satellite, Anvesha, and the 15 accompanying satellites were not successfully deployed. Most of these satellites are believed to have re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere and burned up. This was a significant loss, as several organisations had invested years of work and resources into building and preparing these spacecraft.
There was a small partial success when one tiny experimental satellite briefly transmitted data before losing contact, but it could not be sustained. Overall, the mission was classified as unsuccessful.
The failure has drawn attention because the PSLV rocket has traditionally been known for its high reliability. The space agency has stated that it is carefully analysing the data from the mission to identify the exact cause of the problem and to ensure corrective measures are taken before future launches.
