"A current NBA player and a Hall of Fame player who became a head coach are among nearly three dozen people now accused by federal officials of participating in either illegal sports betting or rigged poker games. And just like that, the start of this NBA season is suddenly overshadowed by scandal. Portland coach and Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups was arrested Thursday morning, as was Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier. They are part of separate indictments. Billups, according to authorities, was part of a scheme to rig poker games that had backing of mafia families. Rozier, the authorities said, was part of a scheme where betters got inside information about his playing status for a game in March 2023, when he was with the Charlotte Hornets. They used that information to wager on his stats for that night. Such bets are called prop bets. The NBA placed Rozier and Billups on leave immediately and says it takes the allegations with the 'utmost seriousness and the integrity of our game remains our top priority.' At least one other defendant, former NBA player Damon Jones, is accused of funneling information about player availability for a pair of Los Angeles Lakers games to betters as well. That and the things Rozier stands accused of are the sports version of insider trading."
