Does the smiling Red Horse beer REALLY exist? We have been told by many Filipino people to "look out for the smiling horse" on the label of Red Horse beer, and that if we were to find this mythical beer, we would discover the rare brew that is MUCH stronger than other Red Horse beers of the same bottle. These stories/folk tales fascinated us. Did Red Horse really release a secret beer, an Easter egg, if you will, for beer drinkers and enthusiasts to hunt down?
Well, during our very rainy trip to El Nido, Philippines, we had so much spare time due to bad weather and canceled island hopping trips that we decided to begin a little treasure hunt of our own! We started our hunt where all good pirates do... on the beach of El Nido. The waves were high, but our spirits were not. We really believed this to be a "fool's errand," BUT we decided to look for this rumored beer all the same.
As we walked around the busy (and construction-filled) streets of the town, we were unsure where to begin. We asked a few of the local trike drivers if they had heard of it and, if so, where we could find it. This question was met with confusion, then laughter—almost as if we had asked these men, "Where can we find Santa Claus?" We unsuccessfully searched nearly all the shops in El Nido town before calling it a failed mission and heading back to OUTPOST HOSTEL EL NIDO.
The rain had begun to fall hard as we left our trike, and we ran across the beach to our accommodation (might we add, the bar is the first thing you are greeted with when entering this place). So, we asked the man at the bar, "Jay Z," if he had ever heard of this Happy Horse beer. He answered, "Yes, but only once in my life, and I was very young." He opened up the chest freezer behind the bar and rifled through each bottle of Red Horse until... SUCCESS!
He pulled out this bottle like a glowing chalice. We all began to laugh and smile so much (maybe that's why it's called the Happy Horse). It was so strange to see this bottle, which looked so similar to the other Red Horse beers, only with a slightly different horse on the front sporting that cheeky, infamous smile. The writing was red, and the back of the label had NO alcohol percentage number on it—something so funny/crazy to see! It's like the company was secretly saying, "Drink it, but what comes after is up to you." The taste was noticeably stronger, as if someone had poured gin into the bottle before it was capped and boxed up.
This was such a fun thing to film, as we honestly believed we were NOT going to find one. So when we did, it was all the more special.
