Hi Everyone! 👋
I’m Dr. Paul Kerstetter, and in this video, I’ll show you how to implement a mixer in an FPGA—also known as a downconverter or upconverter. Mixers are fundamental in software-defined radios (SDRs) and are surprisingly easy to implement digitally as a multiplier and filter.
We’ll cover:
• The concept of a traditional Gilbert cell mixer in IC design
• How digital mixers work in an FPGA using binary multiplication
• Downconversion and upconversion examples with cosine signals
• Handling word length and precision in FPGA multipliers
• A Vivado walkthrough, implementing a mixer and using the FIR Compiler for filtering
By the end, you’ll understand how to move signals in frequency, filter them, and observe the output—all digitally inside your FPGA!

Unrelated to this video, but I’ve written a short book on simplicity and doing less.
