Talk's Ian Collins takes on the issue of rising drug deaths in Scotland with political journalist Iain Macwhirter and Scottish Conservative Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care Dr Sandesh Gulhane.
National statistics revealed a 12% rise in drug deaths during 2023, claiming a total of 1,172 lives. It means Scotland’s rate of recorded drug deaths remain higher than other parts of the UK and European nations.
Iain Macwhirter tells Ian Collins that Scotland has effectively decriminalised possession of hard drugs, and yet, drug related deaths continue to rise. His argument is that the change in policy has largely been a rhetorical change, without much government support to back it up.
Then, Dr Sandesh Gulhane talks about the 'Right To Recovery' Bill proposed by the Scottish Conservatives, that would give addicts a legal pathway towards quitting.
