The Federal Government of Canada created a special program called Bankruptcy Assistance Program wherein if a person is unable to afford the normal costs of filing a bankruptcy, they can secure the services of a trustee at a reduced rate.

You can be eligible for Bankruptcy Assistance Program if you are not in prison, not involved in a commercial activity as business filings can be complicated, costly and time-consuming and do not have “surplus income” which is an amount of money that you earn that is over a pre-defined limit.

Many people misunderstand the BAP system. And explanations from the government often add to the confusion.
