Небо СCCP (Russian for The Sky of USSR) was a popular Russian-language alternative rock band, which formed in Tbilisi, Georgia in April 2002. Fronted by musician, singer and guitarist Kote Kalandadze, the band is considered to be one of the most influential collectives of the Georgian alternative music scene, naming The Beatles, The Doors, Joy Division, The Cure, Nirvana, The Smiths, and Kino among their main influences. The band was active throughout 2002 – 2009 and released four albums.
After the release of their first self-directed music video ‘Dojdi’ (Rains) in 2001, Небо СCCP received positive feedback and was motivated to record their first album ‘Personal Sky’ the same year on a local record label Komuna Records, which did not end up being distributed for sale.
In 2002 Небо СCCP played a short, but well-received tour in Russia in clubs Bunker, Svalka with Nika Kocharov on guitar, Giorgi Lomsadze (Chanchkera) on bass, Irakli Dolidze (Pipi) on the keyboard, but soon returned to Tbilisi to record their first full album.
At a rehearsal with Georgian hip-hop artist Bedina, Kote met guitarist Nikoloz Buzaladze (Bulia), drummer Dimitri Oganesian, and bass player/guitarist Alex Kovziridze who became the band’s permanent members after 2002.
It was in October 2004 that ‘Nasha Post Lubov’ (Our Post Love) was released and introduced the band to wider audiences. The music video for ‘Na Krishe’ (On the Roof) shot at the Tbilisi Hippodrome featuring local music fans, soon became an anthem for the youth of the Tbilisi underground scene and brought the band further artistic and commercial recognition.\
Небо СCCP almost immediately started performing at local live gigs and shot two more music videos for the songs ‘Net Svobodi’ (No Freedom) and ‘Aeroplan’ (Aeroplane). The powerful songs with an original grungy sound, nostalgic lyrics, and a romantic appeal led the album to great success and songs like ‘Povedu’ and ‘Bluz Soldata’ into major hits at live concerts.
The band’s line-up changed in May of 2005 when the bass player Alex Kovziridze was replaced by Giorgi Kordzakhia. The second album ‘Samalioti’ was released in November 2005; followed by two new music videos for songs ‘Takie Kak Mi’ (The Ones Like Us) and ‘Parashuti’.
The band’s third EP album ‘Konec Getto?’ came out in October 2006, introduced by a music video for the track ‘Getto’ (Ghetto). With a more distorted sound and hard-hitting lyrics, the band confronted the repressive political agenda and the state of the society of the respective times.
In 2009 Небо СCCP released their fourth and final album with the title ‘Pisma’ (Letters). The songs included in this album are very different from the band’s previous work, as a result of experimenting, the band developed songs with a mixture of styles, bigger structures, more instrumental solos, monumental choruses, and fewer vocals.
Some of the band’s most memorable live performances include Neo Club in 2003, Berlin Club 2004, Noah-Noah Club 2004, Mziuri Festival throughout 2003-2005, Factory Festival 2006, Beatles Club 2007. In 2009 Небо СCCP broke up forming a new English-language electro-rock project Lady Heroine, with frontman Kote Kalandadze on guitar, Giorgi Kordzakhia on bass, and Dimitri Oganesian drums.
