When it comes to iconic moments in New Zealand rugby league history, they don't come much bigger than the moment Whetu Taewa broke through the Brisbane Broncos defense and threw one of the best offloads you'll ever see to Phil Blake to score the Warriors first try in the Winfield Cup.
For Taewa, that opening Warriors game was one of many great moment of his career including winning a premiership with his Halswell Hornets Club in the CRL, and playing 37 matches for his beloved Canterbury, which included the famous 1993 Provincial grand final against big brothers, Auckland, and he would represent the Kiwis & NZ Māori on multiple occasions.
Taewa would go on to play for the North Queensland Cowboys before a curious move to the Sheffield Eagles in the UK Super League, which would see his side stun the rugby league world by upsetting Wigan in the Challenge Cup final.
