The Prophet ﷺ was not too proud to be seen walking with a widow, handling her needs until they were fulfilled. He taught that serving widows and the poor equals the reward of striving in Allah’s path—or of fasting all day and praying all night. In this practical reminder, Dr. Omar Suleiman urges us to revive this neglected sunnah: make food, cover expenses, protect her dignity, and give space to grieve.
He also clarifies the ’iddah for widows: four months and ten days (or until delivery if pregnant). During ’iddah, she abstains from adornment and spends the nights in her home; daytime needs are permitted. Necessities allow exceptions (e.g., elderly widows needing family care, those who became widows while traveling/Hajj returning home). Islam’s rule is ease with reverence, not cultural burdens like hosting crowds, lavish gatherings, or policing a widow’s emotions.
The sunnah is to serve—not to add hardship. Start a meal train, run errands, cover bills, provide childcare, and offer compassionate companionship. And remember: a mother who raises her children after loss will be like this with the Prophet ﷺ in Jannah. May Allah grant comfort to the bereaved and make us people who lighten their load.
