UWM graduate Patrick Groh, driven by his passion for historic preservation, found a unique opportunity at the Historic Preservation Institute (HPI) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was part of a team of students and staff from the School of Architecture & Urban Planning, and together, they spent a month in England creating documentation of the 15th-century Herstmonceux Castle and grounds.
While there, they documented parts of the castle, a folly, and a field using various scanning technologies. In addition to a plethora of architectural and ornate detail scans, they also provided a topographical map of a field, which further supported archeologists' theories of the location of the on-premise kilns used to fire the bricks for the castle's original construction.
In his last month as an intern at GCA, Patrick gave an in-depth presentation on this technology, his time on the castle grounds, and the scans the team produced—a truly amazing technology for historic preservation, where the only limits are what the insurance allows.
