Arduino’s open-source approach means you control how your system connects to the cloud. Arduino IoT Cloud is the simplest path for visual creation of cloud and device software - with webhooks to trigger events or store data with 3rd party web services. But there are also ready-made code examples to connect your devices directly to IoT services from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or Microsoft Azure. For even more customization users can take advantage of the Arduino libraries including HTTP, MQTT, X.509, and JSON support in order to connect to whatever webservice they prefer.
Retrofitting IoT connectivity to existing systems is made simple by adding Arduino Shields with options for RS-485, CAN or Ethernet. Additional sensors can be added through simply plugging in the ready-made environmental sensing, thermocouple or sensor carrier board for grove sensors - there are also hundreds of sensors available for connection to ADC, I2C or SPI with example Arduino libraries available. You can create a local data-logging solution by adding the MicroSD card shield, control externally powered devices using the relay shield and drive motors directly using the motor carrier board.
