The synagogue of Speyer was inaugurated in 1104 one year before Rashi’s passing . Speyer was the seat of the pious ones of Ashkenaz. Some would move to Regensburg. Minhag Ashkenaz ( customs of Ashkenazi Jewry)owes this community its gratitude.
Among its founders in 1086 are the Kalonymus family, Rabbi Yitchak ben Asher Riv”a and Shmuel Hachassid.
