In dedication to “Tommy,” I have decided to upload this compilation of performances from Elton John’s Moscow performances from 1979. These performances are not from the May 28th show that commonly circulates, but are from the May 25th-27th shows. While the quality is generally good, there are a lot of missing songs and many of the ones on this compilation are heavily cut. Something is better than nothing and I hope you enjoy these!
From what’s available, Elton and Ray Cooper are in great form during these performances with their energy levels being a highlight. I wish that more available audio was available from the Russian tour of 1979 since it was an extremely important milestone in Elton’s career. Now… time to talk about these performance…
“Your Song” is a pretty good performance with Elton’s coarse voice slowing warming up as the performance progresses. “Sixty Years On” still has rough and coarse vocal moments, but some sections are sung cleaner than other ones from the tour. “Daniel” features some nice control throughout Elton’s vocal range along with strong vocal dynamics being used. “Rocket Man” has nice falsetto use which vary between a softer tone and a more reinforced tone which would define Elton’s prime live falsetto as the years progress. “Candle In The Wind” is heavily cut, but what’s available sounds nice. “Tonight” is also missing a ton of the main bulk of the song, but the vocals and piano that are heard sound great. “Better Off Dead” has some really gritty and aggressively sung bits that sound manic when combined with Ray Cooper’s lively percussion work. “I Think I’m Going To Kill Myself” sounds fantastic with Elton embellishing the vocals in the last chorus and the spirited energy between himself and Ray being put on full display. “Bennie And The Jets” features some quirky vocal and piano improvisations along with Elton pulling off overdriven vocals to great effect. “Part Time Love” is full of energy with Elton giving a strong vocal effort. The “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting/Pinball Wizard” section is full of energy that doesn’t let up for a second and the enthusiastic deliveries are a joy to hear! Lastly, the Beatles medley of "Back In The U.S.S.R" and "Get Back" sound incredibly strong and full of vigor!
ENJOY!!!
Note: There are snippets of various songs on the last track (before the Beatles medley). These come from different Moscow nights that do not match performances already featured on this compilation upload. I hope more audio surfaces from Moscow and/or Leningrad concerts as this was a very important milestone in Elton's career!
