10 years after hurricane Sandy, we have invested $1 billion in our infrastructure to repair for potential upcoming storms.

Tim Cawley, CEO of Con Edison spoke on the matter, “This substation flooded significantly, the East Rivers, just across the way in effectively, the East River came in.”
The flooding at this substation and two others in Manhattan left close to 1 million customers without power in the city for a week. The repairs took so long in part because Sandy hit the whole region, debilitating Con Ed’s mutual aid agreements with nearby states. Now the utility has 100 new bucket trucks, stored inland for repair workers to be flown in from all over the country.
As the city marks 10 years this month since hurricane Sandy hit, Con Edison wants the public to know it’s invested $1 billion to make it infrastructure more resilient to future storms than ever before. That includes raising crucial technology, like moving a new control center to a higher elevation.
Aisha Ahmad from Con Edison explains, “We did it in phases to make sure that you know reliability of the station continues.”
The upgrades include building walls and moving many overhead lines, underground, Con Ed CEO, Tim Cawley says, “smart switches will enable the utility to bypass compromise lines and facilities.”
And even though scientist say, climate change will bring more severe storms more frequently, seems like this are less likely to occur because Con Ed has also installed submersible transformers that can operate under a deluge of salty water, and keep powering the city.
