In this special episode of The Pipe Box, Gold Medallist Jim McGillivray showcases a rare treasure: a set of hallmarked, full-silver James Robertson bagpipes from circa 1952. Renowned for their craftsmanship and tonal excellence, James Robertson bagpipes are considered some of the finest examples of vintage Great Highland Bagpipes.
Joining the episode is P/M Matt MacIsaac (@MattMacIsaacMusic), who plays the iconic tune "The Man From Skye" on these historic pipes, offering a firsthand glimpse into their incredible sound. Matt also shares insights about the unique experience of playing these rare bagpipes.
James Robertson, a legendary Scottish bagpipe maker, began his career in 1908, crafting bagpipes known for their meticulous design, exceptional tone, and durable African blackwood construction. Robertson’s legacy lives on, with his instruments prized by collectors and pipers alike for their historical significance and unmatched quality.
