This is part two of the Massachusetts School of Law's Program, Books Of Our Time, which is dedicated to Bruce Levine's book - The Fall of the House of Dixie: The Civil War and the Social Revolution That Transformed the South.

Professor Levine discusses what was going on politically at the beginning of the war, the feeling that Lincoln and others had that the war was about the survival of democracy in the world, the fallacy that it was a war to preserve the union and not a war over slavery, the eye opening experiences of Union soldiers who saw the horrendous situations of slaves first hand, as well as the affect of Vicksburg and Gettysburg on the morale of the Confederacy.

Levine is a Professor of history at The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. The host is Lawrence R. Velvel, Dean of The Massachusetts School of Law.
