Nepal Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has called for a fresh chapter in India-Nepal relations, stressing that Kathmandu carries “no old baggage” and is committed to building a stronger, future-focused partnership with New Delhi. During his visit to India, Khanal emphasized deeper cooperation in trade, connectivity, energy, technology and economic development while describing India as Nepal’s closest and most important partner.

Addressing a press conference, Khanal urged both countries to revive dormant bilateral mechanisms and resume high-level political dialogue. He highlighted the deep cultural and civilizational links between the two neighbours, saying India and Nepal are “children of the same rivers” and should work together to unlock the full potential of their relationship.

The Nepal foreign minister also advocated calm, evidence-based discussions on outstanding issues, including boundary concerns, while pushing for a development-oriented partnership driven by shared economic goals. His remarks come during the first ministerial-level India visit by a member of Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s government, making the trip significant for the future trajectory of India-Nepal ties.
