Too often beginners over-complicate sentences by trying to translate tense - especially all those complex compound English tenses and aspects. German tenses can be simple and by remembering to use these two tenses most of the time, you'll find it much easier to form good German sentences in no time. As we've seen in other videos, there are other tenses like the prognosis form for the future, the simple past and even a form of pluperfect. But we don't really need them most oof the time in our everyday language use.

This video is BONUS content for the 13-week video series for a Beginners' German at the University of Tasmania. They introduce the content for the week and provide a very brief introduction to the main grammatical structure covered in the relevant week. They are accompanied by a textbook Bausteine eins, written by me, Dr Billy Badger. The textbook is made available to enrolled students. If you are interested in getting the textbook (as PDF), you can find it here for the price of a coffee:)
ABOUT US...........................................................................
We've been living in Australia on and off since 2000. Together with my Austrian wife, Christine, and our daughter, we are a German-speaking family. Pronunciation varies throughout the German-speaking world, much as it does in the English-speaking world. My English usage is influenced by Australian, British and Irish usage; my German by central German origins [Bonn] and the overwhelming influence of my Austrian wife :) If you‘re interested in the Austrian Dialekt, I can recommend this video • So geht österreichisches Deutsch / Austria...
