While diving the calm, clear waters off West Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, the Edges of Earth Expedition team witnessed something rare—an elaborate manta ray mating train lasting for nearly an hour.
This was a high-speed, high-stakes pursuit, even though it looked serene. The pace was relentless—even for the diving team trying to keep up. Manta mating trains are rare and energy-intensive, requiring perfect timing, warm seasonal waters, and calm conditions.
This sighting was during the dry month of December, when visibility often hits 25 meters (85 feet). With reef mantas listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, these moments matter, especially as climate shifts and human pressures close in.
Set between Indonesia and Australia, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands blend wild ocean life with a tightly-knit local culture. During the expedition team's stay on West and Home Islands, they spent time with Cocos Malay leaders, learning about their efforts to protect both their heritage and environment. Life here moves slowly, but intentionally—keys left in ignitions, doors open, strangers welcomed with warmth, and endless diving.
