But as the band stretches out in this mid 1970s recording the performance is preferable. Besides It's difficult to better Phil Woods convulsed cranky alto sound in full flight. There's the added presence of Legrand strings cushioning matters in the slow section and with pianist Legrand on board for the finale the band goes like the clappers. Had I known U tube was about to happen ten years ago I would have cleansed my vinyls with plenty of Vim keeping them in proper nick..Good luck to Amazon in their pursuit of lucre on Images it won't affect the quality of Legrand's composition ~ that's a given and as for this performance it almost charges over the precipice the way jazz should ~ this is music especially for those walking in the shadow of joy
I know this is the Phil Woods and Michel Legrand Show but returning after some absence to hear Legrand and Woods going for it. and what shows up only late lamented Mel Torme at full blast on Send in the Clowns.Mention Send in the Clowns and Sarah Vaughan comes to mind Her performance is regal or should that be majestic or both.Christopher Gunning sets down his arrangement for Mel Torme of Send in the clowns and its something else.I came across it in the 1970s upon its release ~ a blitzing take by all concerned. Torme and Ella stand at the top of the virtuoso tree. Many others but Ella and Torme unchallenged and the roiling style of "get the goonies goons" on Send in the Clowns by Torme a reason why.
