I originally created the smoke simulation in Houdini, but instead of building a full environment there, I used Unreal Engine to showcase it in a real-time scene.
This breakdown is made in a simple and beginner-friendly way, so even if you don’t know Unreal Engine or Houdini, you can still follow along.
What this video covers:
Houdini smoke simulation (VDB) overview
Importing the smoke into Unreal Engine
Using the Third Person Starter Project
Downloading free assets from Quixel Megascans and Fab
Camera setup for better art direction
Environment composition and storytelling
Foliage painting, decals, and lighting
Camera animation and final render
I focused more on composition, mood, and visual storytelling, instead of modeling everything from scratch.
