Jean Repetto’s explanation of jazz theory and harmony is revolutionary & modern and yet it is as old as the very beginnings of jazz music.. Jean is the 1st to present the obvious idea that Sousa, parker,Coltrane, and repetto are extremely aware of but unfortunately all these new jazzers have failed to hear.. sorry Barry but your explanation was close but no cigar my friend….here’s the answer(& don’t you forget that Jean repetto taught you this) practically all jazz and blues soloing and bebop harmony can be condensed down to one of 3 scales and consequently the harmonizations of any of those 3 scales…. that scale is (let’s do it in ‘C’).. so it is a C major scale that in addition to all the notes of the C major scale C D E F G A B C it contains the following:
Jean’s jazz scale is: C Db D E F G Ab A B C. …..tada !!!
Now before the mathheads explain that scale has already been written on some aebersold glossary,..anyone who understands anything about permutations is well aware of the ability of plugging in any number of the the 13 notes need to creates a western chromatic scale and by choosing a pitch set you can claim this collection as your scale but the difference being offered here is I am presenting to you the why and how it came to exist and how to use it… I have cracked the code or pun intended found the key to unlock the hip Melodie’s that come out of the scale when creating within it’s boundaries..
I will return with a few more videos for the other scales starting with the modern take on the blues scale
Jean’s blues scale : C(d) Eb F Gb G Ab Bb (b) C
Btw I figured this out before I had even heard of Barry Harris.
