Having been out of steam for 5 years, 34070 "Manston" has emerged following the completion of its latest overhaul inside Herston Works; the main heavy engineering workshop of the Swanage Railway.
First steaming in preservation in 2008, 34070 was withdrawn from its last stint in service in August 2017, following a minor collision with 4MT Tank - 80104. The Bulleid made its way to Tyseley for repairs to the frames and for the overhaul to begin, with 34070 returning to Dorset in 2021; entering Swanage Railway's Herston Works for the completion of its overhaul.
34070 was not repainted during this overhaul, with attention instead being given to preserving its current coat of paint, and prioritising the mechanical integrity of the locomotive. As such, "Manston" appears wonderfully weathered for its return to the Swanage Railway, and stands testement to the tireless dedication and hard work demonstrated by all those involved in its overhaul; not least the volunteers and staff of the owners, Southern Locomotives Ltd.
Once 34070 graced the metals of the Swanage Railway, the same low-loader would take 34053 back to Herston Works. 34053 is going in for its own overhaul to commence. This switch involved 34070 regaining its tender from 34053: When 34053 came back to Swanage after the Great Dorset Steam Fair in the summer, it was coupled to 34070's tender to ease shunting. 34053's own tender is still on the Spa Valley Railway.
