In this 10 minute mini video lesson, you will learn how to play the chords to the ultimate version of “Fly Me to the Moon,” as recorded by Frank Sinatra in 1964. The song was written by Bart Howard in 1954. Actually, it was written as a waltz and had another title, In Other Words. It was quickly changed to what we know as “Fly Me to the Moon” with a subtitle (In Other Words).

This 1964 recording was a collaboration with Count Basie as the bandleader, with a swinging arrangement by Quincy Jones. The rhythm guitar was played by Count Basie’s legendary side man, Freddie Greene. Freddie has influenced every jazz guitar player who plays swing guitar. His solid rhythm guitar playing and economical chord shapes makes a perfect study for jazz guitar accompaniment.

When I teach any song using these chord shapes, I always recommend mapping out the bassline first on the sixth and the fifth string. This means to keep the root of the chord on either the sixth or the fifth string.Once you have the bass mapped out for the song, then you can apply the correct chord shape, or what I call the chord quality.
