Little Black Stoneflies are often the first bugs to appear in late winter/early spring. Stoneflies hatch differently than mayflies. Instead of emerging from the water's surface, the nymphs crawl up onto rocks and woody debris on the river banks and shed their nymphal shucks there. Although they seldom land on the water in large enough quantities to induce heavy feeding, there are certainly times when a good Little Black Stonefly dry fly pattern comes in handy.
For more information about Little Black Stoneflies, and to learn about other insects hatching right now, check out the IdentaFly app. This app is an invaluable resource for anglers and fly tyers alike!

This video shows how to tie a very simple and effective Little Black Stonefly pattern that incorporates a CDC wing. Here are the materials used to tie it:
Hook: Standard Dry Fly Hook, such as the Model 02 from Wholesale Fly Company, https://wholesaleflycompany.com.
Thread: Black 8/0 Semperfli Classic Waxed Thread, also available through Wholesale Fly Company.
Body: Black Superfine Dry Fly Dubbing, available at Precision Fly & Tackle - https://precisionflyandtackle.com/pro...
Wing: Nature's Spirit UV 2 Select CDC in Natural or Dark Gray Dun, available at Precision Fly & Tackle - https://precisionflyandtackle.com/pro...
Hackle: Black Hackle, in this case I used a feather from a Hardline Dry Neck Chunk that worked well.
