On October 7, 1996, he performed for the first time ever in the Arab world . He performed in front of 90,000 fans in Tunis, on his solo tour.

“Beat It” is one of Jackson’s first forays into the rock genre, and talks about knowing when to back down from a fight. It is said to represent Jackson’s disdain for violence. The third single from Michael Jackson’s sixth solo album, Thriller (1982), “Beat It” went Platinum and is an internationally recognized song that has greatly influenced pop culture.

The song was influenced by The Knack’s 1979 mega hit “My Sharona”, which Michael Jackson wrote at the behest of his mentor, Quincy Jones to write something like “My Sharona”.

Famous guitarist Eddie Van Halen contributed the guitar solo for free, according to Wikipedia. When producer Quincy Jones called him up, Van Halen hung up on him three times, thinking it was a prank caller. The next day he went into the studio to record the song. He recorded his solo in half an hour, and even pitched in on arranging the track.

In 1984, Michael Jackson donated the song, “Beat It” to be used for anti-drunk driving PSA’s on TV and radio.

In recognition of MJ’s philanthropy, then-President Ronald Reagan bestowed the Presidential Public Safety Commendation upon him on 14 May 1985.

LIVE PERFORMANCE : On July 14, 1984, Jackson performed "Beat It" live with his brothers during The Jacksons' Victory Tour. The brothers were joined on stage by Eddie Van Halen, who played the guitar in his solo spot. The song became one of Jackson's signature songs; he performed it on all of his world tours: Bad, Dangerous and HIStory.

The October 1, 1992 Dangerous Tour performance of "Beat It" was included in the Michael Jackson: The Ultimate Collection box set. The DVD was later repackaged as Live in Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour.

Jackson also performed the song on the Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special, a concert celebrating the musician's thirtieth year as a solo performer. The performance featured Slash as the song's guest guitarist.

A highlight of Jackson's solo concert tour performances of the song is that he would begin the song on a cherry picker (which he would also later use with "Earth Song" during the HIStory World Tour) after performing Thriller. Another live version of the song is available on the DVD Live at Wembley July 16, 1988. The song would have also been performed as part of the This Is It concerts which were canceled due to Jackson's death.
